Hi, I’m Carla.

Languages have shaped my life for as long as I can remember.

As a child, I learned Italian simply because I enjoyed it. At 13, I spent several weeks in France and was amazed by how quickly my French improved. Two years later, I moved to the United States and discovered what it really meant to live in another language. My English progressed faster than I had ever imagined.

At 16, I decided to study Translation and Interpreting. The challenge was that I knew zero German, yet I needed to reach a very high level in just over a year to get accepted into the degree programme.

So I studied for hours every single day. That intensive year gave me the foundation I needed to move to Germany. But it was only once I started living there—using the language every day—that everything truly clicked. The combination of structured study and real immersion took me from learning German to actually speaking it with confidence.

Those experiences taught me something I have continued to confirm throughout my life:

Study gives you the tools. Immersion teaches you how to use them.

Over the years, I have lived in different countries. For around five years, I travelled continuously while teaching Spanish online to students from all over the world.

Travelling gave me unforgettable experiences. But it also taught me something that many language learners discover too late:

Travelling abroad is not the same as language immersion.

I've met countless people who spent weeks—or even months—in Spain and returned home disappointed by how little their Spanish had improved. Not because they weren't motivated, but because most trips aren't designed for language learning.

It's surprisingly easy to spend your days speaking English, following the tourist trail and interacting mainly with other travellers.

Real immersion is different.

It means having someone guide you beyond the tourist experience and into everyday Spanish life. It means sharing meals, conversations and activities with local people, making mistakes, asking questions, building confidence and gradually starting to think in Spanish instead of translating every sentence in your head.

After years of teaching and learning languages myself, I noticed the same pattern again and again. The students who made the biggest breakthroughs weren't necessarily the ones who studied the most—they were the ones who immersed themselves in Spanish beyond their lessons.

I wanted to create that experience in a way that was intentional, guided and accessible.

In October 2025, I decided to make Tenerife my home and bring together everything I had learned in university, through years of studying languages, teaching Spanish and living abroad.

That is how Casalingo was born.
